Clariant is a focused and innovative specialty chemical company, based in Muttenz near Basel/ Switzerland. The company’s constant commitment to innovation and R&D with a strong focus on sustainability has led to the groundbreaking sunliquid® technology to produce cellulosic sugars & ethanol from agricultural residues such as cereal straw, corn stover or sugarcane bagasse. The sunliquid® technology offers a completely integrated process design. Innovative technology features, such as chemical-free pre-treatment, the integrated production of feedstock-and-process-specific-enzymes, as well as simultaneous C5 and C6 fermentation ensure best commercial performance. Since 2012, Clariant has been operating its pre-commercial sunliquid®plant in Germany. Since June 2022, Clariant is ramping up the first full-scale commercial sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol plant, with an annual nominal capacity of 50k tons, in southwestern Romania. Clariant licenses its sunliquid® technology platform globally. So far, five license agreements have been concluded with renowned industry players in Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria and China.
